A Fully Loaded Month

The end of May/beginning of June is alive with markets and events that are sure to interest those in handmade – there are events every weekend!  It’s great to see the handmade scene thriving even in the cooler seasons.

On Saturday the 21st of May the Sun State Roller Girls are hosting yet another adrenaline packed roller derby bout, with the Definants and Furies going head to head.  Not only is this evening packed with fearless ladies but it’s also packed with stalls and showcases some amazing Gold Coast and Brisbane based designers.  These alternative stall holders spoil the spectators with handmade accessories and clothing.  You can buy your tickets at the door on the night or from the Sun State Roller Girls website.  The event is on from 18.30 – 21.30 and more information can be found here.

After experiencing the roller derby why not take a stroll through Brisbane’s West End?  On the 22nd of May you can enjoy some more handmade goodness at the Marky Markets.  These cosy and intimate markets take part on the 3rd Sunday of every month outside Vinyl and the Hi-Fi Bar on Boundary Street.  Specialising in handmade, thrift and vintage goodies, not only will you find emerging designers but you will also find a feast of 2nd hand goods at very reasonable prices.

The following Friday (27th of May) will see King George Square, Brisbane, come alive with twinkling lights and handmade, the BrisStyle Twilight Market is in town.  These markets are always massive and showcase some of Brisbane’s most talented designers and artists, they are also timed perfectly because Friday night is late night shopping in Brisbane.

June 3rd will once again see artisans setting up stalls and tables around the veranda at Bleeding Heart.  From 10am until 4pm the Bleeding Heart will be home to clothing, homewards, accessories and other handmade goods.  The location on Ann Street is perfect for those who are in the city and ideal for those who want to visit while working in the city – the coffee shop inside is lovely and the atmosphere is very relaxing – perfect for lunch!

On Saturday June 4th, you will be spoiled at 19 Karen, with an exhibition dedicated to the wonderful Frida Kahlo, entitled Homage to Frida.  Frida Kahlo is one of my favourite artists, her portraits are simply incredible and I can’t wait to see what the 25 participating artists have in store for us.  Each artist has submitted a portrait of Frida, representing what Frida means to them and the emotion that her paintings portray.  This exhibition will come to an end on the 2nd of July.

On Sunday the 5th of June you will notice that Hamilton’s Racecourse Road is transformed into the Racecourse Road Carnival.  From 9am until 5pm you will be spoiled with over 120 stalls, selling fresh food, handmade goods and art.  During this family friendly event the local boutiques and cafes will have specials on, coming out of their shops to meet and greet the passers by.  Prepare yourself for music, singing and general merriment.

As you can see, it’s very possible to fill every weekend up with going to the markets or attending an event.  Have fun!
