I can’t believe that it’s November already – time has really flown by this year. Soon it will be Christmas! November’s a great time to get yourself some early Christmas gifts – and there is no better gift than a handmade gift. You will certainly have your pick of markets and exhibitions to attend this November – in the lead up to Christmas it is all happening!
We all love handmade and art, and this November you will be spoiled with lots of events to pop along to (have you got your diaries and pens ready):
22nd of October – 22nd January – Institute of Modern Art
The Institute of Modern Art will be home to 2 wonderful exhibitions. Running for a couple of months you will be able to take in the wonderful work of Tobias Zielony and Diana Thater. Diana Thater’s exhibition entitled Chernobyl is self explanatory; here you will find videos and installations of the 1986 nuclear power plant disaster and how it has affected life today. German photographer Tobias Zielony documented a futuristic housing estate and its inhabitants in Northern Naples. Known for the mafia and drug ties, the collection of images and film both dark and beautiful.
12th of November – BrisStyle Eco Market.
From 9am – 2pm, those who love anything eco, recycled, upcycled or vintage should head to the BrisStyle Eco Markets. Not only will you be surrounded by Brisbane arts and designers but you will also have the chance to take part in 3 “Make and Take” workshops – try making your own cactus pin cushion, learning origami and rags to roses. It’s set to be a brilliant and interactive day!
17th of November – Hearts of Gold exhibition
The Bleeding Heart Gallery is hosting another wonderful Hearts of Gold exhibition. This annual exhibition is home to some of the best and brightest artists from Brisbane and the surrounding areas. So take some time out of day and visit the Bleeding Heart, not only do they have a great exhibition planned but they also have a wonderful gift shop made up of designers who specialize in handmade.
19th of November – 19 Karen Three Solo Exhibitions
Pop along to the Gold Coast’s 19 Karen for the opening of 3 solo shows at 6pm. Works from Canadian painter Brian Donnelly, Melbourne artist Jacqueline Tiepermann and Berlin based artists Jaybo Monk. These incredibly talented artists are exhibiting until the 17th of December.
26th of November – Rat City Roller Girls vs Sun State Roller Girls & Northern Brisbane Rollers
From 5.30pm on the 26th of November you might notice a huge collection of rather excited people heading towards the Brisbane Convention Center. US roller derby team, The Rat City Rollers have invaded Brisbane and are taking on 2 local Queensland Teams. This is set to be a once in a lifetime bout – and it’s all the roller derby community in Queensland are talking about. The outer ring will be filled with local market stall holders who specialize in quirky, alternative and fun designs. Bookings are essential because this is sure to be a sell out!
For those artists and designers who love the work of Frida Kahlo, this might interest you; Brisbane’s Art & Soul Art Studio is planning an exhibition in the new year that relates to all things Frida Kahlo. They are still accepting applications for this wonderful exhibition and if you’re interested you should contact Shelley@shelleymcdonald.com – it’s set to be an explosion of colour.
That’s it for November. I hope you all have a lovely month!
