Local Christmas Shopping Guide

The silly season is upon us – Christmas parties abound, bonhomie and general good will is at an all-time high as we madly dash around and buy up big for our nearest and dearest.

With so much talent at our back doors and so much of that in the convenience of an online portal, there’s no great excuse to get lazy and give your hard earned to some faceless corporation. Do your bit this year and support those bright, talented women and men in our midst who use their tricky fingers and fabulous brains to magic up all kinds of delights.

Here are some of my favourites:

For your eccentric Aunt:
The Art of Jordan Tarot deck

$32

For your younger sister or niece:

For that someone who has pretty much everything:

Berry Colander by Sian Thomas
from Follow Store
$45

For the man in your life:
Convertible Recycled Leather Messenger Bags
from: Happy Cow Bags
$155

Black Ceramic Coffee Cup with Wooden Saucer
from Attia
$33

For mummy dearest:
Vintage Plastic Flower Brooch in Orange by Brooke Johnston Design
from Leeloo
$20

Chrome & Glass Condiment Set in Carrier – Oil Vinegar Salt Pepper Toothpick Holder
from Fox & Thomas
$26.50

For Christmas cheer:
Partridge in a Pear Tree Porcelain Christmas Ornament
from Mrs Peterson Pottery
$12

5 sheets of xmas wrapping paper “jingle bells”
from Paper2
$25

Letterpress Christmas gift tags, 6 pack
from Bespoke Letterpress
$15

And last, but not least, whilst caught up in this buying frenzy, treat yourself:
SPACES by Frankie Magazine
from Leeloo
$23

Bachelorette Corsage Brooch in Yellow by Ginny & Jude
from Leeloo
$43

{The Cindy} Vintage Skirt by twin set
from Leeloo
$49

And don’t mull over it too long – Christmas is stupidly close and for most online stores, shipping closes 20th December or earlier.

Have a cheerful and restful break everyone, see you in the new year!

Finders Keepers Sydney 2011 December Wrap Up

Just when we thought you couldn’t be any more amazing, you took your awesome-loveliness to a whole new level at the December Sydney Finders Keepers market.  We had a few things to be excited about this time around, Angela and I worked on some special new merchandising (handmade of course), we had a wall full of amazing new art for On The Wall A N D we had the most amazing super stall helper, who was none other than Angela’s Dad!  All that combined with the gorgeous weather, beautiful stalls and sweet and friendly faces of our customers, I’d have to say it was a pretty tops weekend all round.

We will be updating the online store over the next few days with lots of new Leeloo goodies, some of which premiered at the market (perfect for taking advantage of our Frankie Giveaway!).  Also, if you were wondering, the full list of On The Wall artists can be found here.

Angela and I are feeling a little bit relieved, a little bit sad and well and truly suffering from a PFKH (post-Finders-Keepers) high.  It was an amazing weekend and we once again would like to thank the supremely talented ladies, Sarah and Brooke, who manage to make a truly awesome event better and better each year.  Thanks everyone!!

A Very Merry Handmade Christmas

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is less than 3 weeks away!  Luckily you can get your Christmas shopping done without going to the mall – there are so many wonderful events this December.  This is the perfect time to support talented designers and buy handmade.

3rd December 2011 – 4th March 2012 – Matisse: Drawing Life
In 2001 I was a bright eyed high school student studying art and design, one of my projects was to write an essay on Henri Matisse.  It wasn’t hard to do, Matisse’s art inspired me and spoke to me more than the work of so many other artists.  I loved the melancholy expressions and the fluid movement of his paint strokes.  I’m over the moon to see that GoMA, Brisbane is exhibiting his work for a whopping 3 months.  So take some time out and enjoy the beautiful and emotional work of Matisse.

10th December – BrisStyle Indie Designers Market:
It seems like a long time since there was a BrisStyle Indie Designers Market at Hamilton but this Saturday is the return!  I’m very excited about this event!  Hosted at St Augustine’s Church from 9am until 4pm, the lush green grass comes alive with marquees and the large hall is bustling with some of Brisbane’s best indie designers and artists.  There will be entertainment, good food and delicious coffee.  Why not come down in the morning and stay on Racecourse Road for lunch?  It would be such a lovely day.

15th December – Etsy AU & BrisStyle Pimp My Table Crafting Event:
With such an emphasis on buying handmade and from indie designers this Christmas wouldn’t it be wonderful to give a gift that YOU have handmade?  On the 15th of December you have your chance to do this with Pimp My Table!  Simple head to Piece Together in Wooloongabba, bringing some crockery and learn how to use porcelain markers.  This event is hosted by Etsy AU and BrisStyle.  It’s set to be a lot of fun – you can head here for more information about the event.

16th December – BrisStyle Twilight Market:
We all know this event well – and for those who don’t should pop along – from 5pm until 9pm King George Square will be home to the BrisStyle Twilight Market.  Prepare to be dazzled with brilliant local designers, twinkling lights and the hustle and bustle of a wonderful market evening.  This is the perfect opportunity to finish off your Christmas shopping and buy handmade.

17th December – Sun State Roller Girls Grand Final:
We all love roller derby, how could you not?  With this season drawing to an end, there is a brilliant double header to enjoy.  From 6.30pm the Beenleigh Arena will be packed with fans and supporters of the Sun State Roller Girls.  Bookings are essential as this is the grand final double header and it’s set to be huge!  With over 20 stall holders specialising in offbeat and alternative design confirmed for the derby markets, you can pick up any last minute Christmas gifts for those quirky and fun friends.

18th December – Marky Markets:
Pop down to the Brisbane’s West End and head to the Hi Fi Bar, here you will find a selection of stall holders lining the streets.  The Marky Markets are back just in time for Christmas, making your last minute Christmas shopping a breeze.  Spoil yourself with handmade, vintage and preloved stalls from 11am to 4pm.

I hope you all have a very Merry Handmade Christmas and a safe New Year!
<3 Amanda

On the Shopfront :: December ’11

The festive season is well and truly upon us!  This could mean some well-deserved quality time with the fam, alcohol poisoning as a direct result of twenty obligatory Christmas parties a week, cheating and eating ahead on advent calendars, and being fortunate enough to witness harried last-minute shoppers getting into biffs in Big W’s decoration aisle.  If you’re me, you know the true meaning of Christmas is paid leave from work, which equates to being paid to sit in your PJs all day eating Doritos and watching every Destiny’s Child video on YouTube.  Hard work but somebody’s got to do it.

The holidays aren’t all carols and mistletoe… The pressure of gift-giving is immense.  No one wants to be the person caught re-gifting, nor the person giving generic candles to all.  A particularly unmemorable gift exchange was the year the girls and I decided to do ‘novelty gifts’.  Instead of thoughtfully funny gifts, we all ended up giving presents we knew the receiver would despise, from which giver took personal enjoyment in giving, while receiver just wanted to punch said giver in the mouth.  And then all the gifts were purposefully lost.  But I digress.  So much can go wrong with gift-giving, but with the help of Leeloo, I’m here to show you that life doesn’t have to be that way!  Please find below some gift options that can only end in smiles all round.

(Clockwise from top left)

1. Paper Crane Brooch by Kimono Reincarnate

People that can fold paper into three-dimensional art impress me. People casually exhibiting skills I’m yet to master always garner a little respect from me. Like the way I’m wowed by people that stand on public transport without holding on and don’t even stumble. It blows my mind. Kimono Reincarnate has created a gorgeous range of Japanese-inspired brooches that remind me of that origami prowess I’m still aspiring to. This Paper Crane Brooch is just lovely and made all the more lovelier having been created from sustainable growth bamboo.

2. Vintage Button Hair Clips in Black & Red by Sheeps Clothing

Made with adorable hand-picked buttons, these Vintage Button Hair Clips in Black & Red by Sheeps Clothing would make perfect stocking-stuffers! My mother would do well to read this.  The only word that could begin to describe her idea of a stocking filler is random and I have a feeling they come from the “gift” shelf found in chemists.  Why I’m still demanding a Christmas stocking at the age of 22 is neither here nor there.

3. Stag Cameo Brooch by A Wilderness For You and Me

This Stag Cameo Brooch is the sweetest and my only wish is that I could blow it up by 400% and hang it on my wall.  Featuring an original vintage illustration framed in a handmade mahogany cameo, and conveniently presented in a small brown gift box, this would be a wonderful ‘here’s one I prepared earlier’ present.  A Wilderness For You and Me can do no wrong!

4. Seam Magazine :: Issue #01

Freshly launched at the end of October, Seam Magazine is a new independent magazine based out of Brisbane. With the aim of fostering the creative, their first issue focuses on start-up independent designers, artists and creatives.  With the ethics of a zine and the durability and density of a magazine (88 pages long and printed locally on FSC-certified 100% recycled stock using soy-based inks), Seam Magazine brings together the best of both worlds and is sure to be an awesome read.

5. Little Folk Boy Pin Pack by Lilac and Snow

Lilac and Snow have put together this super cute Little Folk Boy Pin Pack featuring vintage cabochons housed in raw brass lace edge settings. With each pin measuring a petite 1.8 x 1.3cm, how about doing away with the traditional candy cane insert and pinning these on Christmas cards to your favourite friends? Just beware of your less fortunate friends noticing they didn’t get a special something-something in their card… Jealousy will ensue. But it wouldn’t be Christmas for me without some kind of an awkward exchange!

Libby Edwards

Perth-based independent photographer, Libby Edwards, describes herself as a hermit on her blog, and perhaps this explains why her photographs exude such a sense of pure interiority, even when their subject-matter happens to be wide expansive landscapes.

Edwards manages to capture iconic Western Australian scenes, such as the smoke from bushfires in scrubland and endless coastlines, in manner that seems unique and intimate.  Such an intimacy is also palpable in her portraits which seem to reveal hidden internal layers about their subjects.  You walk away from her photographs feeling as if you’ve been given a glimpse into a sensitive interior imagination.

Edwards is, in my mind, one of the many talented gems here in Perth.  Rather than rambling on about her, I’ll let you enjoy her photography.  To see more of her work, visit her blog, facebook page and website.

Massive frankie diary/calendar giveaway as Leeloo turns 4!

Did you know Leeloo.com.au turned four this month?  We did.  It’s pretty cool really.  I’m quite proud of the fact that Leeloo is still going and that we have the support of a community such as this.  One where there really is so many genuinely lovely AND talented people and I get to spend heaps of time with my bestie.  It’s seriously a privelege what I get to do for ‘work’.

Since we want to celebrate this momentous occasion, we want to have a megaway (that’s a mega-giveaway).

The stuff?

Four people will win a 2012 frankie diary

Four other people will win a 2012 frankie calendar

One other person (a ninth!) will win a 2012 frankie diary, a 2012 frankie calendar and a prize pack of Leeloo goodies (yep, that’s the handmade stuff you can find in our online store).

How can you maybe get these?

All you have to do, is place an order in the online store at Leeloo.com.au between now and December 16th, 2011, and for each $20 spent on Leeloo goodies, you will enter the draw!

Yes, that’s all…but read this too.

Each $20 spent online at Leeloo.com.au puts you in the hat, your order number will automatically go on the draw for each of those $20.  Your order must be completed (paid for).   You can live anywhere in the world, we’ll post your goodies to you.  You can only win one of those prizes.  You can’t contest anything after we’ve announced the winners.  Winners will be announced December 19th, parcels will be sent pronto after contacting the lucky recipients to confirm their delivery address.

Why should you enter this competition?

1. You can knock your Christmas shopping out of the way.

2. You can possibly win a highly coveted frankie diary, or a frankie calendar…..OR BOTH.  P L U S   L E E L O O   S T U F F!

3. You will be spending your hard-earned money to support local small businesses.  We are a family of cottage industry type folk who are super clever at making things by hand, or in small runs, usually at home.

4. It’s better for the environment to buy locally made stuff, as it hasn’t had to travel as far.

5. Generally speaking, handmade means better quality, so things last longer.

6. You will be so happy to buy, give or have something way more special than anything that’s skated it’s way into moulded packaging down a conveyor belt.

7.  Leeloo has really great stuff.  Seriously.  The gift potential at our store is huge!  If you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can buy a gift voucher.

8.  You still qualify for F R E E    S H I P P I N G.  Yep.

9.  You could even use the PRIZES AS GIFTS TOO.

Too.  Easy.
