Melbourne's Airdrie Makim has been designing jewellery since she was a young girl growing up in a remote part of Australia. In 2007, her first year operating under brand name JOOLZ, she beat Dolce & Gabbana to be awarded Accessories Brand of the Year runner-up. 2008 saw further recognition as a finalist for Up & Coming Designer of the Year and Accessories Designer of the Year in the Australian Fashion Awards.
Her approach to making jewellery is that if she can incorporate locally-sourced, sustainable, vintage or recycled materials in her work, she will do so. But of course they still need to be fabulous! Pearls, the world’s only organically sustainable gem, are a big favourite in Airdrie’s designs, as are native Australian timbers, unusual Australian stones, and a range of vintage children’s toys.
Commentary on Third Time’s The Charm, the latest collection from Joolz:
“Joolz' ability to marry the classic with the quirky, and to think outside the box with the materials used, is what makes this collection such a stand-out.”
Tania Braukämper, Fashionising.com
“Think Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow and numerous 40’s pin up girls. Adore it!”
